My First Wild Camp with the OEX Phoxx 1 V2 – A Lightweight Game-Changer?
If you've followed my outdoor adventures for a while, you'll know I've been a big fan of OEX gear for a long time—especially my trusty OEX Hyena II tent. But recently, I decided to test out the OEX Phoxx 1 V2 for a local wild camp, and I’ve got some things to share.
As someone who’s 6ft1, tent space matters.. A lot! The Hyena II has been my go-to for ages thanks to its surprising headroom, roomy interior, and how simple it is to pitch and pack down. But the trade-off? Weight and pack size.
Enter the OEX Phoxx 1 V2, a lightweight, single-person tent designed for for long haul hikes or those looking to cut down on gear weight.
I headed out for a quick overnight trip in the Peak District, aiming for a minimal setup and easy pack weight. The Phoxx 1 V2 was a dream to carry.. Honestly, at just over 1.4kg, it felt like I wasn’t even carrying a full tent.
Setup was super quick, too magnetic two poles, a few pegs, and you're done in under 5 minutes. Ideal if you're trying to pitch in low light or sketchy weather.
Inside? That’s where it gets tight. At 6ft1, I could lie down fine, but there’s not much room to sit up or store gear. Most of my kit had to stay in the vestibule area, which is fine in dry conditions but something to consider in heavy rain.
That said, it handled heavy wind and light rain without issue, and condensation non-existent, which is impressive for a budget-friendly tent like this!
Who’s the Phoxx 1 V2 For?
If you're just getting into wild camping, or looking for a lightweight, affordable tent for solo missions, the OEX Phoxx 1 V2 is a solid pick. It’s ideal for fast-and-light adventures, or when you’re tight on pack space.
But if you’re tall like me and want a bit more room to move around, the Hyena II might still be the better shout—especially if weight isn’t a major concern for you.
Pros:
Super lightweight (1.4kg!)
Packs down small
Quick setup and takedown
Affordable and reliable in mild weather
Cons:
Very tight on space for taller campers
Minimal gear storage inside
Not ideal for longer stays or bad weather
For short, solo wild camps where pack weight matters more than comfort, the Phoxx 1 V2 punches well above its price. If you can live with the limited space, it’s one of the best budget tents out there for wild camping in the UK.
